At Goshen Integration Tutoring Academy (GITA), We are a Non Profit Organization giving newcomer children the right start by preparing them for the correct grade in Alberta schools—confident, ready, and supported. Learn more about our story and commitment to newcomer education in Edmonton.

The Story Behind Gita

Goshen Integration Tutoring Academy was created after seeing how many newcomer and refugee children arrived in Edmonton confused, misplaced, and struggling because their schooling didn’t match Alberta’s system. Families were overwhelmed, schools didn’t always have the time or tools to assess students properly, and children were often placed in grades that didn’t reflect their true abilities.

Seeing this gap—and watching children lose confidence because of it—sparked the vision for GITA.

We started GITA to bridge that gap: to give newcomer students the academic assessments, language support, and short-term readiness training they need before entering public or Catholic schools. The goal is simple: every child deserves to start in the right grade, with the right skills, and the confidence to succeed.

GITA was born from compassion, experience, and a deep commitment to helping families start strong in their new home.

How We Address the Challenges

Newcomer families face unique challenges when integrating into the Alberta education system. Here’s how Goshen Tutoring Academy addresses them directly:

  1. Unclear Grade Placement
    • Challenge: Many children arrive with missing transcripts, different curriculum standards, or interrupted schooling. Parents don’t know which grade is appropriate.
    • How GITA Helps: We conduct full academic and language assessments to determine the right grade and provide clear placement recommendations to schools.
  2. Limited English & Classroom Readiness
    • Challenge: Students may not speak English well enough for Alberta classrooms or understand routines and expectations.
    • How GITA Helps: GIA provides language readiness support, foundational literacy and numeracy, and teaches classroom skills so students start school prepared.
  3. Parents Don’t Understand the School System
    • Challenge: Alberta’s education structure, registration processes, ESL supports, and communication expectations are new and confusing.
    • How GITA Helps: We offer parent orientation, guiding families through how the school system works and what to expect, reducing stress and uncertainty.
  4. Social & Emotional Adjustment
    • Challenge: New country, new culture, new school—children often feel overwhelmed.
    • How GITA Helps: Our environment provides gentle transition, confidence-building, and emotional support before they enter larger school settings.
  5. Academic Gaps
    • Challenge: Many students have had disrupted or inconsistent schooling.
    • How GITA Helps: GIA offers a short-term bridging program (3–6 months) to fill gaps so students don’t start behind.
